Amy Poehler's 'Yes Please' Review

Amy Poehler's Yes Please Review

I'm not 100% sure whether the British public is particularly aware of Amy Poehler's existence. They should be. She's an American actress, comedian, producer, writer and all round gem of a human being who might be best known for her leading role in the sitcom 'Parks and Recreation' or for playing Regina's mother in Mean Girls. Among a wealth of career highlights she also spent seven years on Saturday Night Live, has hosted the Golden Globes twice and spearheaded the awesome 'Smart Girls at the Party' initiative. She's a seemingly fearless individual who grabs life with both hands and makes the absolute most of it ... and now she's written a freaking awesome book!

Yes Please

Amy Poehler Yes Please
At its core 'Yes Please' tells Poehler's life story, which is fascinating in itself if you're a fan of her work, but it's more than that. She takes her life experiences, both good and bad, and turns what she's learnt along the way into wonderful nuggets of wisdom that will give you a great perspective on life.

It's an incredibly easy read, helped by its luxuriously glossy pages and the heavy weight of the book. It's split into three main sections:
1. Say Whatever You Want.
2. Do Whatever You Like.
3. Be Whoever You Are.
With each part containing an eclectic mix of chapters of prose, full page quotes, poems, humorous lists and interludes from her friends (including SNL Weekend Update co-anchor Seth Meyers). I'm certain I will be regularly dipping in and out of it for years to come!

Overall, I found 'Yes Please' to be a hugely uplifting read. It's thought-provoking, life-enriching and made me cry on more than one occasion, simply because I felt understood! I truly think it's got something for everyone, but would particularly recommend it to anyone looking for a strong female role model!
