Burghley Horse Trials 2015

This is a bit of a throwback, but given that I missed so much blogging last year I feel it's justified! I think I've mentioned before that I was a keen horse rider throughout my childhood/teenage years. Although my days in the saddle are long gone, trips to watch the pros do their thing are still a very enjoyable part of my life.

Burghley Horse Trials 2015

September 2015 saw me head (slightly) north for the cross country day of Burghley Horse Trials. Burghley is a three-day event whereby horses and riders tackle dressage, cross country and show jumping on consecutive days. The cross country involves a long track of obstacles, that tend to be more natural than their show jumping counterparts. Penalties are incurred for going over the time allowed and refusals.

As a spectator, it's great fun to spend the day walking around the course, having a picnic and getting a glimpse of all the jumps as the competitors try to navigate them safely ... of course you do witness a few spills too! I'm often left in awe of the riders, many of the fences are terrifyingly solid, I don't know how they have the nerve to do it on a regular basis.

The day makes for a great, but tiring countryside experience. Here are some more snaps  ...
