2017 Oscar PicksI’ve just got back from seeing Fences (cutting it fine I know) meaning I’ve now seen eight out of the nine films nominated for Best Picture (Arrival being the one I’m missing). Full disclaimer – I’ve seen most but not every film nominated and don’t pretend to have any clue about the politics of the Oscar vote. Regardless, for posterity’s sake, here are my favourites in each of the main categories…

BEST PICTURE: La La Land
ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE: Casey Affleck (Manchester by the Sea)
ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE: Natalie Portman (Jackie)
ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE: Lucas Hedges (Manchester by the Sea)
ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE: Michelle Williams (Manchester by the Sea)
ANIMATED FEATURE FILM: Kubo and the Two Strings
CINEMATOGRAPHY: La La Land
DIRECTING: Damien Chazelle (La La Land)
ORIGINAL SCORE: Justin Hurwitz (La La Land)
ORIGINAL SONG: Lin Manuel Miranda – ‘How Far I’ll Go’ (Moana)
ADAPTED SCREENPLAY: Luke Davies (Lion)
ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY: Kenneth Lonergan (Manchester by the Sea)

I found supporting actress most difficult to choose. For me, each of the nominees were real highlights of their respective films but ultimately it’s Michelle Williams’ performance in Manchester by the Sea that’s stuck with me – particularly the scene with the ambulance and the double-hander with Casey Affleck towards the end – sublime!
